The Base Is the Driveway
Ask anyone who has replaced a failed driveway in Western New York what went wrong and the answer is almost never the concrete. It is the ground underneath. Frost gets into a poorly compacted or poorly drained base, lifts the slab in January, drops it in March, and by the third spring there is a crack running corner to corner that no amount of good concrete could have prevented.
So that is where we spend our time. Liberty Pour Concrete excavates to depth, brings the subgrade to a consistent compacted stone base, and gets the drainage right before a single yard of concrete is ordered. It is the least visible part of the job and the reason our driveways are still flat when the neighbour's is not.
What We Pour
- New driveways — full layout, excavation, base, forms, reinforcement, pour, and finish, including the apron at the street and the transition at the garage.
- Replacements — tear-out and disposal of the old slab or asphalt, base correction, and a new pour. We diagnose why the old one failed and fix that, not just cover it.
- Extensions and parking pads — widening a narrow drive, adding a turnaround, a third-car pad, or a boat and trailer parking area, matched to the existing slab as closely as concrete allows.
- Aprons, ribbons and approaches — including the section at the road, poured to your town's spec where a village sidewalk or curb cut is involved.
Thickness, Reinforcement, and Joints
For a standard residential driveway carrying cars and light trucks, four inches over a compacted base with wire mesh or rebar is the right build. Where the drive will hold a heavy truck, an RV, a trailer, or equipment, we go to five or six inches with rebar on chairs. Thickness alone does not prevent cracking, though — joints do. Concrete will crack; the job of the contractor is to decide where. We cut control joints at correct spacing (roughly 2 to 3 times the slab thickness in feet, in both directions) so the slab relieves stress along a straight tooled line instead of wandering across the middle of your driveway.
Finishes
Broom finish is standard and it is standard for good reason: it grips in ice and snow, it hides ordinary wear, and it costs the least. Smooth trowel looks sharp but is genuinely slick in a Buffalo winter and we will generally talk you out of it for a drive. If you want the drive to do more visually, the usual moves are a stamped or coloured border, a saw-cut pattern in the field, or an exposed-aggregate strip — decorative touches that do not compromise traction where the tires actually go.
Salt, Plows, and the First Winter
New concrete has not finished curing when winter arrives, and de-icing salt on a first-season slab is the single fastest way to cause surface scaling. Use sand for traction the first winter. Ask your plow service to run a shoe or skid on the blade so it is not gouging the surface, and mark the edges of the drive before the first snow. We put all of this in writing when we finish the job — it is a two-minute conversation that protects a five-figure investment.
What a Concrete Driveway Costs Around Buffalo
In Erie County a standard broom-finished, reinforced concrete driveway generally runs $8 to $14 per square foot installed. Stamped or decorative driveways run roughly $14 to $22 per square foot. A typical two-car driveway of about 600 square feet lands somewhere in the region of $5,000 to $8,500. Tearing out and hauling away an existing driveway usually adds $1.50 to $2.50 per square foot, and difficult access, significant grade correction, or drainage work are priced separately.
