The Floor Is the Building's Foundation

On a pole barn or a post-frame metal building, the slab is not decoration — it is the surface everything else depends on. Get it flat and it takes a lift, a hoist, a workbench, and a floor drain. Get it wrong and you spend the next twenty years shimming equipment, chasing water to the low corner, and looking at cracks that opened the first winter.

What We Pour

  • Pole barn floors — poured inside a finished structure, screeded flat and hard-troweled, with the pitch and drainage the building actually needs.
  • Metal building and post-frame slabs — poured to the builder's dimensions with anchor-bolt layout, thickened edges, and perimeter detail to your building supplier's spec.
  • Detached garage and shed slabs — with thickened edges or footings where the structure bears on the slab.
  • Aprons and ramps — the concrete outside the doors that takes the worst abuse: transitions, ramps, and turnaround pads sized for what you actually drive in.
  • Equipment, generator, and tank pads — small reinforced pads set level and sized to the manufacturer's requirement.

Thickness, Reinforcement, and Flatness

A shed floor and a shop floor that will hold a two-post lift are not the same slab. For light residential storage, four inches with wire mesh over a compacted base is appropriate. For a working shop, tractors, trailers, or a lift, we pour five to six inches with rebar on chairs, and thicken further under point loads. Where the structure bears on the slab we form thickened edges or integral footings to your building supplier's drawings.

Flatness is the part people underestimate. We screed and float carefully and finish with a hard trowel where the floor will be a working surface, because a floor that is a half inch out over ten feet is a floor you fight for the life of the building.

Vapour Barrier, Insulation, and Drainage

If the building will be heated, finished, or used for anything that cares about moisture, the slab needs a vapour barrier under it and, in many cases, perimeter insulation. If you are running in-floor heat, the tubing has to be laid, pressure-tested, and secured before the pour — coordinated with your heating contractor. Floor drains, trench drains, and pitch to the door all get decided before we form, because none of it can be added afterwards without cutting the slab. We will ask you these questions at the estimate even if nobody else has.

Pouring Before or After the Building Goes Up

Both sequences work and each has trade-offs. Pouring first gives easier access and a better finish but means the slab has to be protected and dimensioned exactly right for the builder. Pouring inside a finished structure protects the slab from weather and lets you pour later in the season, but access for the truck and the crew is tighter. We coordinate directly with your building supplier or contractor and work to whichever sequence suits the build schedule.

What Building Pads Cost

Concrete pads and building floors around Erie County generally run $6 to $12 per square foot installed. Large open pours price lower per foot than small ones because the fixed costs spread further; thickened edges, heavy rebar, vapour barrier, insulation, in-floor heat prep, drains, and significant site excavation all add. Rural sites with long hauls or difficult truck access can add as well. We will walk the site, talk to your builder if that helps, and give you a free written price with the options broken out.

Can you pour a pad for a metal building, generator, or equipment?

Yes. Alongside pole barn and garage floors we pour metal building slabs with anchor-bolt layout, and smaller reinforced pads for generators, tanks, AC units, hot tubs, sheds, and equipment — set level and sized to the manufacturer's requirement. If you have a spec sheet or drawing from the manufacturer, bring it to the estimate and we will build to it.
