A pool deck is the one slab on your property people walk on barefoot, wet, and usually in a hurry. It has to drain away from the water, hold a texture that is safe under bare feet, stay cool enough to stand on in August, and then survive five months of freezing, thawing, and snow load without spalling at the edges. That is a different set of demands than a driveway, and it needs to be poured differently.

Finishes That Are Safe Under Wet Feet
Slip resistance is the first decision, not the last. We will walk you through the options during your free estimate:
- Broom finish — the workhorse. Directional texture, excellent grip, lowest cost, and easy to repair or extend later.
- Textured / knock-down finish — more grip than a smooth trowel with a softer look than a heavy broom, and it hides minor surface variation well.
- Stamped and sealed — stone, slate, or plank patterns with integral colour. We use a slip-resistant additive in the sealer on every stamped pool deck, because sealed stamped concrete without it is genuinely dangerous when wet.
- Coloured broom with a stamped border — a common middle ground: safe field, decorative edge, lower cost than stamping the whole deck.
Drainage, Coping, and the Details That Fail First
Most pool deck failures are water problems, not concrete problems. We pitch the deck away from the pool at a consistent slope so rain and splash-out run to the yard rather than back into the water or into a low corner that stays wet all season. Where the grade will not allow it, we build in a channel drain and tie it to daylight.
We also pay attention to where the deck meets the coping. That joint moves — the pool shell and the slab expand at different rates — so it gets a proper expansion joint with backer rod and flexible sealant, not a hard butt joint that will crack by the second winter. Around the perimeter we cut control joints at correct spacing so the slab cracks along the lines we chose.

Pool decks here take a beating that decks in mild climates never see: freeze-thaw cycling, snow piled on top all winter, and salt tracked across from the driveway. We pour air-entrained mix at proper thickness over a compacted base, reinforce with wire or rebar as the job calls for, and cure the surface properly rather than letting it dry too fast in the sun. We also ask you to keep de-icing salt off a new deck for the first full winter, and we say so in writing when we hand over curing instructions.

A broom-finished concrete pool deck in the Buffalo area generally runs about $10 to $20 per square foot installed, depending on finish, deck shape, access for the truck, and how much excavation and base work the site needs.
